DETROIT OUTLASTS MUSKEGON 8-7

by Kathleen Coyne

DETROIT, MI - The Waza Flo continued their home unbeaten streak on Saturday night at the Detroit City Fieldhouse as they downed the Muskegon Risers 8-7. The game saw much back and forth action but behind a Rod Asliani hattrick and late game heroics from veteran Dominic Scicluna Detroit came out victorious.

The Flo came out firing early and often and found themselves with a quick two goal advantage as they capitalized on Muskegon errors in their defensive zone and Asliani netted his first two goals of the game. Their high-press style of play caused fits all night long but Muskegon did find their counter opportunities as Aldony Mendez and Matthew Schmitt evened the score for the visitors heading into the halftime break.

The Risers earned their first lead of the game early in the third when Scott Doney scored to give them a 3-2 advantage. The period saw much back and forth action as Joey Tinnion leveled the score again and veteran Aaron Byrd then gave the Flo another lead at 4-3. Muskegon fought back though in quick succession when Schmitt and Dylan Mines combined for a pair of quick goals to put the Risers back on top 5-4. With under a minute left in the 3rd frame, Asliani completed his hattrick to tie the game at five heading into the final 15 minutes.

Detroit never backed away from the high-press and it paid off late when first year player, Jeremy Sheppard, regained a lead that would not be relinquished. Talal Hamodi then entered the score sheet as he gave the Flo a comfortable two goal lead at 7-5. The Risers hung around as Mendez scored his second of the night to cut the lead to a goal before Waza Flo legend, Dominic Scicluna fired home the ultimate deciding tally. Doney added his second of the night late in the game but the Flo defense was able to limit the damage as the rode out the finish to an 8-7 victory.

Detroit improved to 3-3 on the season and a perfect 3-0 at home. The Risers get a chance at revenge in just a week as the Flo head out to Muskegon on February 2nd for a 7:15 match at the LC Walker Arena. Muskegon fell to 1-6 on the season and hope that they can upend a hot Detroit team on Michigan's west side.
